This jacket was a picture I had in my head for awhile just waiting for the right fabric and the right pattern to come along. In the late 90’s and early 2000’s I had a forest green corduroy jacket which I loved and wore to death. I wore it out until it disintegrated with each wash. Even the buttons were not salvageable. I vowed to find another one but never did. One day I did come across some gorgeous green corduroy in Spotlight and hatched a plan to replace it.
The pattern I used was Butterick B5402 and it was a fiddly sew but worth the effort because it worked out just as I had pictured it.
I did fluff some things up, there was some unpicking and fixing along the way but I am pleased with how it turned out. It is a snug fit so if I were to make another I would size up. I don’t wear it as much as I should because it is one of those garments that needs adjusting while you are wearing it to sit just right. I prefer my clothes to be of the throw on and forget variety. It is not a comfortable jacket which is why I haven’t made another one but I do wear it sometimes just because it is so cute.
The pattern does offer advice on how to fit the jacket and there is also information on Connie Crawford’s website to optimize the fit which is where I will head if I do decide to make another.
The jacket sits between my waist and hips on my 182cm frame but given most of my height is in my legs that is probably where it will sit on most people.
Overall the clear instructions and nice details make it worthwhile sewing all of the fiddly bits to finish with a jacket that is very cute. I do think it is worth spending the time (that I didn’t) to head to the website and optimize the fit to make sure the jacket is worn as much as it should be.
