I’m participating in #memademay over on insta and my share for day 12 is a special one because it’s not so much a #memade but a #mummade.
My Mum made this for me when we were living down South freezing ourselves through a Winter in a Defence house with no heating. It is one of the warmest things I own and I still reach for it on these bitterly cold days.
My Mum has always been a maker. She is a fab knitter and has made so many cozy jumpers for me over the years. The one below is etched in my memory as I remember her sitting up until all hours to finish it so I would have it to wear to our local show.
There were so many makes over the years and I don’t think there was ever a time where I didn’t have something that Mum has made for me in my wardrobe. There were toddler sundresses, school uniforms, costumes and new outfits for special occasions.
My Mum also came from a long line of makers. Here she is with her Mum and Grandmother, all rocking frocks they had made in the 70″s.
I have also been fortunate enough to be surrounded by other makers growing up. My sweet Grandma pictured here with my brother and I always had a crochet project on the go and made most of her own frocks on her treadle Singer.
Some of my Grandma’s female ancestors were immigrants from Poland who disembarked in Maryborough and worked as seamstresses for the local Tailor.
My Nan was also a sewist and an avid crocheter and has produced many many fancies, some of which I am the proud owner of.
My very first #memade garment was a pair of Giggle shorts made in Year 9 Home Ec and my Mum again made me a shirt to match.
I have had so much fun making over the past 31 years and I am glad to have grown up around so many women who showed me how to create garments with my very own hands.
Thanks Mum for setting me up to be a maker all of those years ago.
Thanks to these three beautiful souls who chose me to be their Mum and give me so many reasons to keep on making.
Happy Mothers Day!
