I have had this pattern for around ten years now and I am just as keen on it now as I was when I bought it. The Versatile Wrap Skirt pattern is still for sale from Toni’s Make It Perfect site which is great to see as it is a timeless classic. I was only just getting back into my sewing after having my kids and had been reading all of the sewing blogs for awhile. All of the cool kids were sewing this skirt so I thought I’d jump on the bandwagon.
This was the very first Indie pattern that I had sewn and it has a lot traits that are common to Indies like the clear, simple instructions and really accurate sizing. In this case I think Toni must have spent a lot of time testing and tinkering to get it right because the sizing is perfect!
This is why I think it is worth investing in. Even though it is a simple design and a lot of clever sewists could probably draft their own versions, I am happy for someone else to do the hard work and reap the benefits of their effort to sew something that fits perfectly has all of the right proportions.
This was my first version and I honestly can’t remember which size I sewed but I do remember I measured and which ever one I was directed to was the perfect fit.
Can we just take a minute to appreciate just how beautiful this fabric is? I was fortunate to have my Mum pass on her fabric stash to me when they were moving and this was one of the beauties included. It so thin and light but is not see through and has the tightest, tiniest weave of any fabric I have ever seen. My Nan traveled to Asia a couple of times in the 70’s and 80’s and I have a feeling this might have been a souvenir brought back for my Mum.
Isn’t it incredible? I love the colours, the colour combinations and the design. I could not bring myself to hack this gorgeous fabric into something that I may or may not wear and that’s why I knew the Versatile Wrap was the right choice. I thought that even if I didn’t like it or wear it I could still salvage the majority of the fabric and reuse it.
That was not a problem, I loved it and am still wearing it all these years later. My second version was also from a vintage fabric from my Mum’s stash.
I love that the wrap can be worn according to your personal preference. worn on your hips or waist. Tied on the side, front or back. I think technically it is designed to be worn tied at the side but I found the tie rubbing on the inside of my arm annoying so I solve this by tying at the back.
This is a flattering skirt as you can wear as loose or as tight as you like and it has seen me through various fluctuations in my weight and figure. There is a band on the bottom of the skirt where you could use a contrasting fabric which is perfect for those scraps that you don’t know what to do with.
I also have another skirt pattern of Toni’s that I’ll review in a separate post but I can tell you that those skirts are also favourites of mine. When I have another special fabric that I can’t bear to cut up this will be the first pattern I reach for.
