Pattern Reviews Sewing Thrifting

New Look 6808

I had seen versions of New Look 6808 popping up on my feeds but didn’t know if it was going to be a good fit for my curves. When I was doing a lap around the craft section of my favourite Op Shop I recognized this one at the front of the pattern stack. For 50c I thought it was worth a try!

I have hips that usually make this style a no go zone but I cut out the size I needed for my bust and waist and graded out an inch each side for my hips. The only other variation I made to the bodice was to not sew the darts.

My first try was in a thrifted crinkle crepe that I wasn’t a huge fan of. I knew it would be useful for a toile and this pattern I was unsure about was perfect. I made up style B with the sleeves from D. It fit surprisingly well and has been worn to work where the dark colour is really useful.

My second try was with another thrifted pale grey crepe that I knew would be another great addition to my work wardrobe. I have worn them both a lot changing the look with various bottoms, scarves and necklaces.

For my last try I used another thrifted fabric that I had already used for a dress and a contrast from my stash. This time I made view C.

This is not my usual style but it was fun to sew and I have enjoyed wearing it!

The pattern instructions were easy enough to follow but I would call thisa beginner to an advanced beginner sew, depending on which view you choose. The collar on view C was tricky and I am not entirely happy with the wrinkles but I think the only person that worries about them is me.

What does really annoy me about this pattern is how skimpy the facings are. This is common in a lot of the big four patterns, indie designers seem to have a much better grasp of how little things like this can make a garment so much more enjoyable to wear. This pattern in particular had tiny neck facings and it does not sit well and needs to be constantly adjusted. If I make it again I will definitely widen the facings, it would be well worth the extra fabric!

It’s a good basic pattern and you could have lots of fun with all of the variations.

  1. Wow, you’ve certainly had value for money from this pattern! I agree with you about the Big 4 and their skimpy facings, though, the indie designers definitely do better. Lovely makes!
