These reusable face wipes or scrubbies are a quick and rewarding make and the only skills you need are a few basic crochet stitches.
I have used Moda Vera Elenna which is 50% cotton and 50 % acrylic. It is a nice thick 12 ply and I think the acrylic/cotton mix allows them to dry a little quicker than 100% cotton. I am still using up yarn that I bought on clearance 5 years ago but the next yarn I buy I will be looking for a 100% natural fibre to compare. We have been using wash cloths made from this yarn for 5 years now and they are still going strong and have held their shape so I do think this blend has it’s advantages.
I used a 5.00mm crochet hook and as you can see from the photo the yarn is nice and thick compared to the hook.
Start with a magic loop. If you are not sure how to go about this there are loads of great Youtube videos on how to get started.
Chain 2, then do 11 double crochet stitches into the magic loop.
Slip stitch into the top of the chain stitch.
To start the next row, chain 2. Do 2 double crochets into the top of each stitch from the previous row. Slip stitch into the top of the chain stitch.
You can leave the scrubby this size or put a third row of double crochet stitches to make the scrubby bigger.
To add a third row of stitches, chain 2 then do one double crochet into the top of the double crochets in the previous row.
Leave a tail of approximately 15cm and cut off to tie off the yarn as close to the last stitch as possible. Weave in the end.
You should have a nice spongy reusable wipe that you can use and wash over and over saving money and reducing waste. It doesn’t matter if the stitches arent perfectly neat or flat as any raised bits will provide a bit more scrubbing surface.
It depends how many times a day you need a face wipe and how often you wash but I like to keep a dozen or so in a jar on my dresser to cycle through.
