I have made a LOT of different pants and shorts patterns, some indie designers and some from the big pattern companies, in search of the perfect pant fit. After many attempts I have stumbled across this one which has been the best fit for me so far. I haven’t shared all my failed attempts (we would be in the teens by now) because those patterns seem to work well for a lot of people and I don’t think there is necessarily a fault with the pattern, they just didn’t work well for me.

I have made two versions so far, knee length shorts and a culotte length because they were the gaps in my wardrobe.

The culottes were from some polyester/cotton suiting and this was a nice weight for this design.

My second pair were made from a thrifted tweed.

I think the reason this pattern has worked for me is the use of darts instead of pleats or tucks on the front and back. It still has a waistband that allows them to sit nicely (even with a tummy) and there is a generous cut.

I am thrilled that I have found a pattern that fits me and comes together easily. The only changes I will make to my next version are to take some ease from the front crotch to remove some of the gaping below my tummy. I like the wider leg on these versions but I may try tapering in the leg on another version to change the look slightly.

I don’t think there is a magic pant pattern that suits everyone but I am happy that I have finally found one that works for me.
