Pattern Reviews Sewing

Vogue 1410

I had high hopes for this pattern as I had seen a couple of nice versions sewn up online.  While the pattern itself was fine and it was an easy sew, I guess this is a cautionary tale about making sure the style is right for your body type and paying attention to the fabric suggestions.

I am tall (180cm or 5’11”) and have a waist so I thought this style might be flattering but I was wrong.  I made the dress allowing for a full bust but it looked like a walking tent.  Given my height there was just way too much fabric and because I had ignored the suggestion of a lightweight  fabric (instead opting for a drill) the fabric was sticking out too much at the sides.  I felt like a sculpture wearing it!

I did manage to salvage the make by cutting the dress off to knee length, trimming some of the fabric bulk away and adding a couple of extra darts to make the top more fitted.  I hope I will get some wear out of it over Summer as I love the fabric.

I do intend to have another go sometime but in a lighter fabric, maybe a seersucker, like the pattern suggested.  Still learning the hard way after all of these years!
